IB PYP G5 Field Trips in Suzhou S&T Town Tram Base and in CGL Energy Company and in Suzhou Science Museum for Youth

By the end of November this semester, the fifth grade has carried out three profound field investigations in combination with the UOI inquiry unit.

In the first unit, "How we organize ourselves," children are constantly updating their understanding of "systems" and "human-created systems" to realize what rules and roles they and those around them need to follow in their communities and the structure of society as a whole. Next, the children decided to learn more about one of the most important man-made systems around us: the transportation system. Therefore, we contacted the tram base of the High-tech Zone for field research. The children eagerly visited the exhibition hall and systematically understood the whole process of the tram from its invention in the 19th century to the high-tech addition of the present. In addition, people also came to the tram repair and maintenance center to understand how its daily maintenance work is carried out. Finally, the children experienced the cab of a tram and simulated driving as a rail driver. This field trip has both theory and practical, the children  learn through fun and they all feel very meaningful.

In our second unit of inquiry, "How the world works", the children used their prior knowledge of energy, classroom learning and continuous research to further their understanding of fossil energy, water energy, solar energy, geothermal energy and wind energy. Children are obsessed with green new energy, so our resource parents arranged a visit to GCL Group's Future Energy Hall. Inside, the children felt the future of a house that relies entirely on electricity, experienced the whole process of changing the trolley point, and tried to lift a ton of polymer crystal pillars. Due to the strong scientific nature of this unit, we went to Suzhou Youth Science Museum together with Grade Four to visit and interact. Through a variety of models, the children more intuitively felt the principle of power generation and the simulation process of subsea oil production and other energy-related content, and through hands-on activities to generate electricity, benefited a lot.
